Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a common infectious disease among infants and children caused by enterovirus and/or coxsackievirus.
Current monovalent vaccines protecting against EV71 have effectively reduced the proportion of severe HFMD cases and mortality. However, HFMD transmissions are still prevalent, thus changes to the dominant serotypes should be closely monitored.
A multivalent HFMD vaccine is thus crucial to avoid increasing case burden due to other causative agents. Hence, we are spearheading the development of a tetravalent HFMD vaccine that is able to protect against the 4 dominant HFMD serotypes to control the disease transmission.
